I love to read. Besides the Bible, here are some of the best resources I’ve found on marriage, childbirth, babies, and raising children. What I have learned through reading all these books and articles has literally changed my life! I feel like our family started afresh and we now have a clear direction and purpose.
As you read, you might find some of these books contradict each other (they do!) but realize that you are reading one person’s opinion and it is up to you to decide how God wants you to implement the principles you learn in your unique family. For me, I read because I need a renewed vision, I need education, and I need practical know-how by someone who’s walked this path before me. Therefore, I list these books here, not as an exhaustive list of all the good books out there. These are just the ones I’ve read that have helped shape my marriage and parenting philosophy.
Childbirth and Babies
On Becoming Babywise-Book
A baby sleep blog I found helpful especially with my tiny ones and schedules
The Wonder Weeks-Book (I mostly ignore or chuckle at the advice in this one, but it does a great job explaining “mental leaps” your baby will make and helped me make sense of some unexplained fussy times we had when my babies were little. Good “accessory read” I’d say, but I do not agree with the parenting advice in this one!)
Child Training (It may seem silly, but really, try to start reading these before your first baby is born or very soon after! The earlier, the better.)
To Train Up a Child-Book (Be sure to order the updated version published May 2015! It includes a bunch of new material that is beyond helpful, even if you’ve read the original version 15 times like I have!!) 🙂
Raising Godly Tomatoes-Book and Website
No Greater Joy-Website articles are often helpful when dealing with something specific
Reb Bradley Articles-This website has some great free articles which are hard to find but located under their “free” section called “family life.” (“How we accidentally teach our children to disobey us” was given to me in a child-training class I attended and it was especially helpful to me, as were several others I found. Feel free to browse the site. I’ve never read their book, but if I do, I will provide an update here!)
On Becoming Babywise II-Book (covers 5-15 months)
Start-Book about doing work that matters (I bought this for my husband, but ended up really enjoying it too!)
The Total Money Makeover-Book on good money habits
Smart Money, Smart Kids-Book on teaching kids about money
